family calendar organizing tips

i get asked all the time, how do you stay organized with so many schedules to accommodate? how do you keep track of everyone’s daily activities? today i cover this topic over at Boston Mama’s!

As the queen bee of the family, how do i keep it all organized? For starters my heart beats to to-do lists & calendaring and that is what keeps our active family functioning like a well-oiled machine. The key to my organization – a large family calendar. Mine is a classic franklin covey beauty. I also use lots of notes – post-it notes for daily to-dos and notes on my iPhone for shopping lists/reminders. In order to combine everyones schedules together, i must be able to see an entire month at a time. So, this is the only area of my life that technology has not taken over completely. long live the pencil & paper!

My personal, most useful tip is to schedule everything that happens out of the ordinary. Meaning: if your kids get out of school early on wednesdays, and that occurs every week. Write it on the calendar for every wednesday, “early out day.” Don’t expect yourself to remember that detail. Plan on forgetting. This way, you always have a note to remind yourself what goes on each day of every week.

moving with kids

good morning friends. I am going to focus all my efforts today on packing for my upcoming utah trip + packing for our move. in the meantime, nikki from the salty pineapple is featuring me as a guest on her blog today. I’m talking about moving as a family, something I feel like we are mastering this year {hardly.}

these are two perfect visual representations of how i pack – for trips. i take it all! have you seen these guys in asia? they are legit – they really pack their carts like this and manage to maneuver through the most crazy traffic. it always makes me smile.

happy friday!

friends, this past year i have been reading, the happiness project. have you read it? heard of it? it’s written by Gretchen Rubin and it’s based on,

“Why I {she} spent a year trying to sing in the morning, clean my {her} closets, fight right, read aristotle, and generally have more fun.”

there are twelve chapters in the book & this year, i’d like to highlight each of those chapters here on see jane blog.

on the first friday of each month, “happy friday,” i will introduce & discuss each chapter, starting with January and Chapter 1. I’ll give a little insight into what i was impressed with & what i plan on working on that month. I’d love you to join me, what do you think?

This is the type of book, that I read with pen in hand. by the end, i’ve marked up the whole thing, made notes, asterisks, exclamation points. in “getting started,” the first thing i underlined was this,

“…It’s like dieting. We all know the secret of dieting – eat better, eat less, exercise more – it’s the application that’s challenging. I had to create a scheme to put happiness ideas into practice in my life.”

love that. {remember, i am a goal-happy-kind-of-gal!}

Chapter 1 Boost Energy – Vitality.

In this chapter, Gretchen focuses on: go to sleep earlier; exercise better; toss, restore, organize; tackle a nagging task; act more energetic. She also states that, research shows, being happy energizes you, and at the same time, having more energy makes it easier for you to engage in activities – like socializing and exercise – that boost happiness. common sense, right?

I am following one of Gretchen’s goals for this month. go to sleep earlier. I love being a night owl because it allows me to accomplish so many things after my kids have all gone to bed, but while raising kids i don’t have the luxury of sleeping-in either, so i live on very little sleep at times. i also function alright on little sleep, but i realize for good health, i should be sleeping more. her book states, sleep is the new sex! ha! so funny.

another point Gretchen points out is, “start walking more.” i have always had this strange judgement towards walking. i expect myself to be running, so if i go walking i am disappointing myself. i will turn down a walk, just because i feel it’s not adequate exercise. and that’s lame. i want to focus on my regular workouts + walking more. especially since we are currently living in such a beautiful green, lush area of the country.

in the section under toss, restore, organize, gretchen says, people are finding their possessions truly unmanageable. we cleared out most of our clutter with our big move this year. but i realize, that since moving, i am still keeping a few items that we are not using & i need to toss or organize better. this is on my January list too!

it is by studying the little things, wrote samuel johnson, that we attain the great art of having as little misery, and as much happiness as possible.

the first chapter is packed with more goodness than i mentioned here. however, those are the two items i am going to focus on this month. sleep + organizing.

what will you do?

happy friday!
xoxo.

oilcloth storage bins

this past thursday i went to my first craft night at soel.

understatement: it was so fun. shelby, who is a friend of mine + the owner of soel was our lovely host. it was so nice to just show up & have all the supplies + tools ready for us. we were able to just sit down & sew! and, all this + delicious refreshments for only $8! And, instead of making just one oilcloth storage bin, we were given the option to make two for the same price because she had extra supplies! love it!

shelby used this tutorial from design sponge. and, it’s truly a cinch to whip these out. shelby also mentioned that she found most of her darling oilcloth on etsy.

soel is the cutest boutique around… check it out:

if you are interested in attending a future craft night at soel, go here to like them on facebook + join their email list for future events!

cheers to crafting!

bubble wrap hopscotch.

we are busy with projects around here! projects that involve moving! i have a large-moving-to-do-list, and each day we are checking off tasks.

my motto: organizing by minimizing!

sela is thoroughly enjoying this-whole-organizing-and-cleaning-process.

she takes time to play with everything, one more time. even if the item was never hers to begin with! she’s building forts with storage bins, setting up pretend shops with christmas decor, playing dress up with older siblings past costumes…

and, while we are working hard — we are still taking time to play hard, too!

bubble-wrap hopscotch!

i saw this idea here, on pinterest. {i’m still obsessed with pinning!} and while preparing to move, we have a good supply of bubble wrap on hand, so this was as great a time as any to play with some!

i think bubble-wrap hopscotch could be fun in so many different ways! i’m thinking last-day-of-school activity! it would be cool to find a HUGE piece, and let the kids go crazy on it as they leave for summer vacation…

what’s better than popping bubble wrap, when you’re a kid?!?

remember: our yard sale is scheduled for saturday, june 11th, at 9am! mark your calendars! {we will have clown costumes available!}

my second new motto: less is amore!

this causes tremendous amounts of happiness…

1. my art room
2. creating spaces for my kids to create
3. organizing with a rainbow theme

this was a very easy, fun project. and it was spurred by my myla.
she wanted to organize the markers by color, so we rounded up all the small vases/jars we had already – and voila!

rainbow happiness.

i hope all my kids will have a passion for creating. for crafting. for painting. for writing. for designing. for making something out of nothing. because no matter what else is going on in life, no matter where they are, creativity provides so much happiness and confidence.

just let them be creative.

next: i want to work on organizing my books like this. wow.
{maybe myla will do that for me too!}

a peak into my storage rooms…

as you can see, clear storage bins are a favorite organizing tool in my home.

i like them because you can get a glimpse of what you are looking for without taking off the lid or digging through mysterious boxes to find things. everything in the bins stay clean, things remain smelling good. smell is huge for me, i dislike anything with an odd odor, and mice can’t get into bins! dusty & i once stored all of our early-marriage stuff in boxes at his families ranch, we went overseas traveling for two years and returned to all of our boxes full of mice. yes, mice were living in the boxes, in all of our stuff. it was not good.

i also really like that i can print signs that can be seen as labels from the inside. i love how this looks with all the bins lined up on the shelves. makes my little o.c.d. soul so happy & content!

the bins are great for organizing holiday decor, keepsakes, children’s clothing, re-usable party decor, and/or items rarely used. i’ve packed up some of the kids’ toys that are typically ‘messy’ to play with. legos. polly pockets. littlest pet shop. you name it, we have probably owned it by now. these toys are now special occasion toys and are brought out to play with only once in a while. the bins also make for easy clean-up!

a bonus to the storage bins, if you do move often, it makes moving easy! You don’t have to pack anything up or look through boxes to decide what to take/what to get ride of… you are ready to go, it’s already organized and boxed. and, if you need to store it, they’re mouse-proof!

christmas is my favorite holiday. therefore, it warrants its very own storage room. i also use this room for storing party decor, and the halloween tree.

however, you will notice – i don’t disassemble my christmas trees. i simply undecorate them and carry them to the storage room. {a little lazy!} these are decoration trees that go on our porch or around the house. we do get a ‘real’ tree for the big daddy. ;)

when i went storage-bin crazy about ten years ago, in order to cut costs, i did wait to find sales at Kmart, Target, and Wal*Mart. Typically a few times a year each of these stores will discount the bins 50%. Usually it’s a buy one, get one free, or just 50% off. so, if you are looking to make the switch from boxes to clear storage bins – look for sales!

happy organizing!!!
