falling into november…

there are times when i sit down to write a blog-post, and everything comes together so easily. the photos, the words, the theme – thoughts are quickly captured and slide into words for you to easily understand. then, at other times, i spend days thinking and thinking and thinking about how to share what i’m thinking about…

i am stunted by a brain that’s working faster than speech allows, so i just stop. and stutter, and i don’t make any sense.

there’s so much I want to write, and i’m stuttering a bit.

our post-hurricane weather has been calm, sunny skies. yet, our town is a bit of a mess. fallen trees, sagging electrical lines, leaves everywhere… the sun hasn’t shined quite enough to dry-out the deep sogginess left behind…

my brain and body are feeling the same way.

so, dear readers, what i want to talk with you about today — is your thyroid. my thyroid. how many of you KNOW where your thyroid is and what it does? if you know where it is, and what it does, i’m guessing you’ve had challenges with it — because most people i talk to — if they don’t know anything about their thyroid, it’s because they haven’t had any challenges with it. which makes sense, right?

well, right now — let me tell you in case you don’t know. the thyroid gland is more or less shaped like a flat butterfly, just below the adam’s apple, on the neck. you normally can’t feel it {unless there’s a problem}. the main job of the thyroid is to put out thyroid hormones, which are a pair of chemicals that float through the bloodstream and, control metabolism.

{this reference is for the lady readers} just like a self-breast-exam – right now – feel your neck for any “thyroid nodules” you may be unaware of.  this is just a precaution for you, because i had never checked…

right before we left utah and moved to boston i had a final physical with my doctor there — on this particular day my doctor thought my neck looked faintly swollen and checked it – sure enough he found a nodule, a fairly large nodule — mine measures almost an inch-and-a-half in diameter. my doctor told me nodules were very common and to go forward with my move and find a doctor in Boston asap, and get it checked…

fast forward: 15 months later — i have a new doctor who checked it, she sent me to get an ultra sound – the ultra sound didn’t look good so I went in for biopsy #1, the results were non-determinate. because: the cells were “clustering” which is a sign of cancer cells, but the other tests were not getting enough information to determine if the nodule is cancerous or not. i go to a different doctor/hospital for biopsy #2, same results. i decide to continue eating whole foods + lots and lots of hot yoga + juices cleanses… and after a lot of research, waiting, and deciding to go in for biopsy #3… my endocrinologist tells me straight-up i am too young to have a nodule this size, it does not look good, regardless of what i do, we can’t find out anything else until we take it out.

so, after i have spent months trying to avoid the surgery, my nodule and the right side of my thyroid are being removed in about two weeks. a couple of weeks after that i will find out what happens next.

so, you see, like the storm that hit the east coast – i’m living in this stuttering-messy-zone of “what-if and i-don’t-know.” until the surgery is over…

i have friends who have already had this done, and everything went smoothly. however, i’d love advice – from both sides. it should be known that my surgeon has warned me that everyone and their dog is going to tell me what to put on my scar – and i can’t take any of your recommendations. apologies. my surgeon says i will strictly use what he gives me. so, please give advice on anything else! what should i expect afterwards, what do i eat? any natural methods for healing quicker that don’t apply to the scar – i’d love to hear your thoughts.

by the way, massachusetts is beautiful in november. xoxo.

*new to me*

i really appreciate, and enjoy a good spa day, so when my niece {Heather Johnson} gave me a gift certificate for a 50-minute massage + a luxury pedicure at the spa club where she works – i was stoked! a mom has to relax, right?!?

The Spa club that is *new to me* has three locations in Salt Lake City. While I was in Utah, I stopped by the Jordan Landing location for both of my services. i loved how clean and new the spa was – there is something magical about walking in to a calm place where you can retreat after a crazy day or week. amen?!?

the massage was absolutely incredible – who doesn’t want to spend 50 minutes getting oil massaged all over your body? my favorite part of a massage is that i feel like i am taking care of my body – giving it a little preventative love. if you are in the SLC area, give the spa club a call & request my niece! she splits her time between two of the locations. {tell her jane sent you!} the nice thing about the spa club – they offer everything! hair, nails, waxing, massages, special treatments and they sell some of my favorite body products.

plus, the deluxe european pedicure with aromatherapy was the most amazing pedicure i have ever had! i mean, she rubbed orange slices on my feet. and used a hot stone. plus a brown sugar scrub. my feet are still glowing from all the attention!

my final recommendation: run, don’t walk!

{photo by me – me getting the indulgent pedicure!}

* i was given the gift certificate by the spa club to share a review on seejaneblog. all thoughts and opinions are mine. if you have a product that you think would be a great fit on this blog for a review, please email me at: jane@prolook.com

BluePrintCleanse

juice cleanse update:

for anyone who asked – here are my post-cleanse-thoughts…

first of all, i followed the cleanse exactly as you are told to do it. i prepared, which you can read about here. i stayed hydrated by drinking lots of water & herbal tea in-between my juices. I also went to great lengths to sweat during the cleanses as recommended. and now, i am adding all my other foods back on board.

so, how did it go?

day 1: i felt mentally prepared, and committed to the cleanse. i would go as far as to say this day was easy. i was tasting each juice for the first time, and using the term loosely, i would say i “liked” them all. let me clarify – the green juice is more or less a blended salad. but it’s new-to-me to be drinking green juice, so this one was not my favorite. but on day one it was easy to drink. the pineapple & spicy lemonade are easy to drink, of course. i LOVE beets, so the beet juice wasn’t too bad. funny story, myla smelled my beet juice and immediately said {with a puckered look} “that smells revolting!” so, if you’re not a beet/ginger fan – you may not like the smell. and… the cashew milk. oh, the cashew milk, this is the icing on the cake for making each day a success, which i’m sure is why it’s juice #6 at the end of the day. it’s good. i’d buy it, just to drink it.

on day 1, i also went to a 1-hour hot yoga class, went running with husband, and went on a bike ride. i wanted this cleanse to really work, so i also focused on getting 9-10 hours of sleep a night in order to allow time for my body to heal between days. i also felt going to bed early helped with avoiding bedtime snacking.

day 2: i woke up feeling ok, but the day went downhill quickly. i typically get a lot of caffeine in my diet between black teas, coffee, and crystal light energy packets. so, even though i’d slowed down my caffeine a few days before i hadn’t stopped it completely. so, by day 2, a fierce headache set in. accompanying my headache, i felt mildly nauseous, so drinking my green juices & beet juice were really hard. i managed. but, it took some fierce focusing to not get sick.

on day 2, i did cardio and weights at home. i also took a one-hour nap in the middle of the day to try and help with my headache.

day 3: i woke up feeling incredible! my headache was gone – i had tons of energy. day 1 & day 2 i never felt hungry. so, i started to notice hunger on day 3, but was able to drink my juices without any trouble + really started to feel fit & light. just over-all really good.

on day 3, i took another hot yoga class & did cardio at the gym.

post-cleanse, day 4: i felt INCREDIBLE! really great. i had this light-airy-fit feeling that i never expected. totally different than how i normally feel after eating good and working out by my normal standards. my main motivation for the cleanse was to eliminate toxins in my body & boost my immune system. i’ve caught every cold possible this winter + have some other health issues right now that i was hoping this would help. i figure it couldn’t have made anything inside of me worse! bonus: i lost almost 5 pounds during the 3 days.

overall, i am very happy that i did the cleanse, and i’m even happier that it’s over! ha! look at it this way – right after a woman has a baby is not the time to ask her when she plans on having her next baby, right? so, right now – i don’t plan on doing this cleanse or any of the other blueprint cleanses anytime soon! however, ask me in a few weeks or a couple of months and maybe i’ll be considering it…

since adding food back into my diet, i have not had any problems. no stomach aches. no nausea. my body has adjusted great. for more recipes & info about blue print cleanse, here is a fun article that was printed in domino. i am now adding more fresh/raw food to my diet, however, i’m not eliminating my grains & meats.

do you have any easy-favorite fresh recipes? if yes, please share!

side note: i had a blog reader + couple of instagram buddies who were juice-cleansing at the same time as me. i also have a friend doing the same cleanse this next week. it was great to do this with a few others at the same time. so, if you’re considering the cleanse, find a friend. misery loves company. hehe… good luck!

xoxo.

juicy details.

about two weeks ago i mentioned on my instagram feed that i was thinking about doing a juice cleanse. a few people who commented said they would also do it if they knew more about it, or wanted more details. after a little research and a few recommendations, this is what i’ll be doing.

i am starting on the 20th, in six days. then, i am going to follow up the cleanse with a diet filled with more fruits & veggies. specifically greens. i think i already eat a lot of veggies – because my diet is typically very low-carb. however, i also eat a lot of meat. meaning: it’s common for me to have meat at every meal. so, i am going to do the juice cleanse for three days, then i am going to cut-back about half of the meat from my diet.

also, i’ve been off soda for over a month! not just diet coke, but ALL carbonated beverages. i don’t notice a big difference in how i feel, but i’m thinking long-term, and it must be healthier.

also, i’ve started a new class. i love it – have you ever tried it? it’s the perfect mix of ballet barre & workout for me.

also, i’ve gone back to yoga, and i’m now doing hot yoga. it’s so good for my body. it’s as if my bones are thanking me daily for all that stretching. and i love a drenching sweat like that, i leave feeling like every toxin has left my body.

also, i am curious – how do you fit health & fitness into you life? for years, it has just been a priority to me. i may not make a home-cooked meal three times a day, quite often i skip showers with hair that hasn’t been washed in two days, three days…, rarely put on make-up, wear my work-out clothes all day long. {i really like cute workout clothes because of this!} however, this little sacrifice allows me to fit in my workouts more often than not, and that little detail keeps most of the cobwebs out of my head. that little detail keeps most of the funks far away. and that is important to me.

so. is it a priority to you? is it not? do you wish it was? do you have other things that just must come first? as women, i feel it’s so important that we take this time for ourselves. what do you think?

have you tried anything new in your health/diet/exercise life lately? this was the year for me to change it up, focus on being healthy, and it’s happening. i love it.

xo.

wheat berries & edamame

husband and i attended a dinner party here in boston in January – where the above appetizer was served. it’s a mix of wheat berries, shelled edamame, seasoned with freshly squeezed lemon, sea salt, and pepper. served on endive. since having this delicious appetizer at the dinner party, i have made it twice. once at home for lunch and once in utah for another party. i prefer the mix served on green leafy lettuce, the endive is a bit bitter but makes it look prettier. so, it’s your choice what type of lettuce you serve this on. the dish is not packed with too many flavors, but it’s fresh, easy, and addictive.

if you are new to wheat berries, check this out. i purchase them ready to go at our local whole foods.

happy eating!
let me know if you try it! xo.

*palis verdis eggs

we just made this as part of sela’s birthday brunch,
and i have to share the recipe, because it’s a delicious favorite!

this comes from the kitchen of my friend caryn,
she is oozing with good recipes!

mix:

10 eggs
1 lb shredded jack cheese
1 tsp baking powder
2 cups small curd cottage cheese
1 – 7 oz can mild green chilles
1/2 cup butter – melted
salt & pepper
cubed ham, if desired

bake @ 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

* this is a great low-carb recipe, i like that we can eat it as a family for at least two days with how much it makes…
i’m not saying it’s healthy {high in calories/fat}, i’m just sayin’ it’s low-carb!

::happy eating!::

our gym… and a challenge.

lately, i have been forgoing the gym and the laundry and the upstairs bathroom that despertly needs to be cleaned and instead trying to get caught up on blogging, enjoying friends who came to visit, and trying to adapt to our new back-to-school-schedule.

i wake-up and put on my work-out clothes, i wear them all day while enjoying all that is new around us…

and then, i take them off and go to bed. did you catch that detail: i never worked out.

so.

i have a new challenge for myself, and for anyone who would like to join me.

i am going to get in great shape, in the next six weeks.

seriously. only six weeks.

i have been-OFF-sugar for one month, and have lost three pounds. unfortunately, i gained at least ten this summer, so three is not going to keep me in my skinny jeans this fall. i must be eating well, AND exercising to get great results.

***

soon after we arrived here, we went searching for a local gym. after trying out a few, we chose the boston sports club. they are unlike any health club we’ve ever joined, mainly because they focus on family fitness. traditionally, the gyms i’ve had memberships with, if you choose to use the childcare – the kids are all in one room together & it’s somewhat of a defend-yourself-babysitting-zoo with an extreme lack of order. never been much of a fan. so, i’ve typically tried to work out at home to avoid taking my kids there over the years.

boston sports club has a very modern approach, in that they also want the kids active while at the gym. so, if i take sela and/or kj, they get to go to the large basketball gym & the kid-trainers run drills with them, shoot hoops, jump rope, etc etc. also, if the kids choose to stay in the kids club room, they make crafts, have snacks, it’s really cool. the parents like the kids being active & the kids have a great time! my munchkins love our little routine {well. to be honest, sela cried & screamed the first four times she went due to seperation anxiety from me – but now she loves it!}: i drop them off at the kids club, i get my workout on, they have fun without realizing they are working out, i pick them up when i’m finished & we all grab a snack at the snack/juice bar, we get to spend some time hanging out for a bit – then continue our day. often, we hit the outdoor pool afterwards. i have loved this little routine. the gym became part of our summer vacation here.

…the gym offers literally everything. they have six indoor tennis courts + four outdoor clay courts – which is where myla is training now with a fierce French coach that she’s very fond of, he’s been able to help her increase her strength on all her hits. this is also where myla spent one week at tennis camp, and attended her first tournament here in new england. the bsc has an indoor pool for rainy days/winter, they have a fun outdoor pool {with an impressive snack bar} that is where we spent a few days in august. kiana is able to workout with dusty and i, if she wants to -

and, now that we are more settled, my home gym is also set-up. with two gym options, i really have no excuse to go to bed without having a workout somewhere in my day.

i’m eating good, exercising – and i’m going to get my scale to a very happy number in six weeks.

game on!

are you with me?
